The US intelligence about Nord Stream does nothing to make this mystery any less murky

The network of cables and pipes under our seas is potentially the Achilles' heel of the western world.Submarine power cables, energy pipes and optic fibre communications are as vital to our lives as they are vulnerable. If Russia is in the game of sabotaging them the consequences could be felt by everyone. Its military has the capability, there seems little doubt.Russia is thought to have a fleet of specialised below-surface vessels designed for the job. But does it have the will and was the attack on Nord Stream a precursor of things to come?Given that urgency are we any nearer to working out who was responsible? For now the mystery remains as murky as the waters in which the attack happened. This is despite a slew of claims and counter claims. Advertisement When the attacks happened unnamed official sources briefed that Russia must have been behind them.We were told only Russia had the means to carry them out but what was the motive? Why would Moscow sabotage the conduit through which it has sold so much gas to Europe? Our sources could only speculate.Something about trying to look unpredictable and dangerous. Now a new theory has emerged implicating "pro-Ukrainian" groups. But the latest report from the New York Times could not be more nebulous. It says that "new intelligence reviewed by US officials suggests that a pro-Ukraine group - likely comprised of Ukrainians or Russians" were the culprits but "there are no firm conclusions".Read more:How the Nord Stream 2 pipeline has been controversial from the startPipeline connecting Russia with Germany is symbol of how political decisions can become toxicAstonishing vagueness for a paper that values precision and clarity and claims to abhor unattributed reporting.Similar reports in Germany claim that authorities there identified a commando of six people who allegedly carried out the attack using forged passports. The report in Zeit Online claims "traces lead in the direction of Ukraine. However, investigators have so far found no evidence of who ordered the destruction".Well that's all clear then. Unsurprisingly the Ukrainian government has poured scorn on all of the above."Although I enjoy collecting amusing conspiracy theories about Ukraine's government," tweeted one official, "I have to say: Ukraine has nothing to do with the Baltic Sea mishap and has no information about 'pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups'." Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 3:29 Traces of explosives found on pipeline (Nov 2022) The reports followed polar opposite allegations from veteran US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who first made a name reporting the My Lai massacre by US troops in Vietnam. He claimed to have evidence the CIA was behind the attack.Critics say his journalism was also long on unnamed sources and short on concrete evidence. It seems remarkable that reputable news outlets are allowing unidentified spooks to use their august institutions to bandy around unsubstantiated claims that seem to amount to little more than smears currently. Will we know the truth? Not in the absence of more concrete and compelling evidence. The fog of war is notoriously impenetrable and never more so, it seems, than hundreds of feet below the surface of the Baltic Sea.

Children ‘completely on edge’ amid ongoing aftershocks in Turkey and Syria, UNICEF says

The earthquake in Turkey and Syria has left children "completely on edge" and fearing their "world is going to be turned upside down again" amid ongoing aftershocks, a spokesperson for UNICEF has said.Nearly 52,000 people lost their lives in the disaster, which flattened many buildings and left others too dangerous to occupy. Joe English, a communication specialist at UNICEF who visited Turkey and Syria, told the Sky News Daily podcast the scale of destruction "knocked me sideways" and he saw "buildings just completely flattened, pancaked, buildings ripped in half".But for many in Syria, the earthquake is just another catastrophe on top of the Syrian civil war.Mr English said families in northwest Syria were already living in tents "because they have been displaced not once or twice, but multiple times by the conflict." He added: "We're now approaching 12 years of conflict. There was one young boy I was speaking to earlier this week, Majid, and he was nine years old."His entire childhood has been spent set against this backdrop of airstrikes and displacement and once again being forced from his home once again, his mum having to explain to him why they can't stay where they are. This is just the latest catastrophe." More on Turkey-syria Earthquake Related Topics: Mr English said it was "critical" for children to return to school as soon as possible, "because that gives them that hope for the future and that gives them that sense that there is something better coming down the road". Image: Sabriye Shaymusa, nine, gets stools out of her damaged home for their tent in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in Bozhoyuk, Turkey This generation will rebuild the country Advertisement Mr English said Majid and his brother told him when they grow up they want to work as a doctor or an engineer."And I thought that's such a specific dream for a child. But then you look around you and you think they want to be able to help the people that they see every day," he said."They want to be doctors so that they can help heal people who are injured, whether it's by the earthquake or by the conflict. They want to be engineers because they've seen their societies destroyed over and over again, whether it is by fighting in the conflict or by these horrific natural disasters." Image: A damaged mosque is seen in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake, in rebel-held al-Maland village, in Idlib province, Syria Image: A man waves to a neighbour as he walks to his damaged home in Bozhoyuk, Turkey Another looming crisisMr English warned that earthquake survivors in Syria now face another looming crisis around access to clean water, with thousands of suspected cholera cases being reported in northwest Syria."It is a sad irony that you can speak to a child who has lived through 12 years of war or catastrophic earthquakes, tens of thousands of aftershocks, and the thing which could be the biggest risk to them right now is a glass of water," Mr English said. Image: Syrian artist Aziz Asmar paints street art on the rubble of damaged buildings in the rebel-held town of Jandaris, Syria Hopefully the world will not move on againHe said it was important to ensure the crisis in Turkey and Syria does not leave people's minds, by getting people to "continue to talk about this work, to donate to the organisations that are doing this incredible work, to put pressure on their politicians to continue supporting this work."Hopefully we will not be in a situation in a month from now, or a year from now, where the world has moved on again."

Flaxton: Indian restaurant up for sale for over £650k

The Jinnah branch in Flaxton has been put on the market after decades in the location. Alongside this branch, Jinah also operates multiple restaurants and takaways throughout Yorkshire, including The Viceroy, in Monkgate, York, and venues in Harrogate, Selby, Bradford, and Shipley. The branch in Flaxton, located on the A64, between York and Malton, has been put up for sale with an asking price of £675,000. Jinnah in Flaxton (Image: Barry Crux) It has been put on the market by Barry Crux Estate Agents, who are working on the sale jointly with Mark Brearley and Company. The site extends to approximately to 1.2 and includes a large internal trading area and kitchen. A spokesperson for Barry Crux said: “(Jinnah) has traded very successfully as an Indian restaurant together with a takeaway facility for all these years. “The sale has come about as a result of our client’s desire to reposition his business interests.” They explained that the ‘Jinnah’ trading brand will be specifically excluded from the sale. The spokesperson went on to say: “Clearly the property could be used for any restaurant or similar use without any difficulty although it will need to be refurbished and re-branded if it is not to be an Indian or similar type. Inside Jinnah (Image: Barry Crux) Inside Jinnah (Image: Barry Crux) “The property could revert to being a pub (as it was before Jinnah took it over) subject to planning consent.” On the location of the site, the spokesperson added: “The property and site is very suitable for numerous other uses given its prominent position on the A64 with high traffic flows, and being very easily found. Outside Jinnah (Image: Barry Crux) “The property could become a large retail outlet, offices or similar without too much difficulty as internally the main space is largely open plan. “Other uses are likely to require planning consent.” The Press has approached Jinnah for a comment, and will publish the response once it is received. More information on the sale can be found on Barry Crux's website.
