Three Bears Foundation donates £20,000 to York Against Cancer group

York Against Cancer is "delighted" to receive a generous donation of £20,000 from the Three Bears Foundation to create a ‘Family Room’ within the newly opened Leveson Centre at York Community Stadium. The team said the donation will be "instrumental" in providing a safe space for those affected by cancer in the local community, offering practical and emotional support, complementing the clinical treatments provided at the hospital. Julie Russell, CEO of York Against Cancer, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Three Bears Foundation for this generous contribution towards The Leveson Centre’s Family Room. "This donation has made a huge difference to the development of our new cancer support centre, helping us create a welcoming and supportive environment where people affected by cancer can come and access the support they need. “This donation is also a testament to the wonderful work the Three Bears are doing to raise awareness and support for pancreatic cancer across the country.” The donation will help to open a new Family Room and The Leveson Centre in York (Image: YAC) The Three Bears Foundation was set up in loving memory of Jane Burn, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in December 2017. The foundation received its name from Jane’s nickname for her son 'Chrissy Bear'. Since then, countless others have joined Mark and Chris in raising awareness of pancreatic cancer. Their mission is to raise as much public awareness and funds as possible to further medical research and support the families that have been affected by pancreatic cancer. Chris Burn, founder and trustee of The Three Bears Foundation, said: “The Three Bears Foundation are incredibly proud to make this donation and be working with such an outstanding local charity, York Against Cancer makes such a difference to our local community. "We were so happy to be able to make this donation and be a part of the new Leveson Centre.” The Leveson Centre is open for people to visit from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, to see the space and have a cup of tea or coffee over a chat. The centre plans to offer a range of holistic support services including complementary therapy, information and advice, support groups, financial and psychological support, as well as being a place for cancer patients and their families to meet and connect with others. The Family Room in the Leveson Centre is now available for support groups to use. For more information or to arrange private use of the room itself, email: [email protected] Over the last three decades, York Against Cancer has raised more than £20 million to make a difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer.

Dip, Donate and Nominate for Saint Catherine's Hospice this April (Image: UGC) “We are asking that you donate £8 - or more if you can - as it costs £8,000 every single day for us to provide our care to patients and their loved ones. "We couldn’t do what we do without the help and support of our amazing community. Have fun and happy dipping." Anyone taking part is encouraged to post about it on social media, tag friends and tag Saint Catherine’s so the hospice team can see and share your efforts. Childcare sector responds to Jeremy’s Hunt’s budget moves for industry

Already, the industry says it is underfunded, with rising costs not being covered by government support, and staff leaving the sector, forcing nurseries to close. The comments follow Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in his Wednesday budget announcing plans for 30 hours free provision for all under-fives. The policy will be introduced in stages to ensure “there is enough supply in the market,” he said. From April 2024, free childcare for working parents will be available to those with two-year-olds 2024, covering around half a million parents, but it will initially be limited to 15 hours. From September 2024, the 15-hour offer will be extended to children from nine months, helping a total of nearly a million parents, and the full 30-hour offer to all under-fives will come in from September 2025. In his Budget speech, Mr Hunt said the Government will increase funding paid to nurseries providing free childcare under the hours offer by £204 million from this September and rising to £288 million next year. Helen Gration is the founder of Yorkshire Montessori, which has nurseries in Fulford, Strensall and two in Leeds, and is also a campaigner and spokesperson on the sector. She called the chancellor’s announcement “brilliant news for parents” but said for providers it will have “alarm bells ringing.” Childcare was becoming increasingly expensive, she explained, but so it was for providers as they faced rising costs due to higher minimum and living wage rates imposed by central government. Some 70% of outgoings were already made of staff wages. “It’s woefully inadequate funding already,” she said. Helen says the government should not refer to free childcare as what it pays providers does not equate to an hourly rate with costs going up. The need for more staffing to increase provision will make it “more difficult to make sums add up” Already, nurseries have been forced to charge for consumables and extras to make up the funding shortfall, as allowed by the Department for Education. “It’s the only way we can continued. Already nurseries are closing, that’s a real worry.,” she added. Caroline Marsden, managing director of the Sunshine Day Nursery on Huntington Road, York, has written numerous letters to government on the issue. “For the last 15 years, the funded amounts of money have never covered the childcare costs under strict regime and ratios that we have to provide under the regulatory governed bodies. We have struggled to pay, hard-working staff, the correct amount. “Yet at the same time, the government have demanded an increase to the intellectual knowledge of practitioners to feed the nation with competent learners,” she said. Caroline confirmed government provided the bulk of income to private nurseries and relied on the sector “caring too much” to make up the shortfall. She added: “Relaxing (staff-child) ratios, as discussed by the government, would cost more stress and more staffing problems. The only way to help with rich encouragement of education is to enhance the education of those teaching them and relaxing the GCSE levels required as we rely on those inherently natural with children to provide rich opportunities for our learners for the future.”

Endometriosis – York woman on Instagram to raise awareness

She counts herself lucky. Within a year of starting symptoms, Casey had been diagnosed with endometriosis, a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places. It is listed by the NHS as one of the 20 most painful conditions. The average waiting time for diagnosis is 7.5 years - meaning many women suffer in silence, their conditions unknown and hidden from family and friends. York-based Casey, 32, set up an Instagram account to publicise her experience of the condition - one that was shared by many high profile celebrities including the late movie star Marilyn Monroe, actor Whoopi Goldberg, and Spice Girl Emma Bunton. To mark Endometriosis Awareness Month, which is running through March, Casey wanted to share her story with Press readers: Casey's endo journey "I first had symptoms in 2019 - period-type pain, but all the time. My periods got way more painful than they had been but thought this was 'normal'. I went to the doctors roughly eight times before I was finally referred to a gynaecologist at the hospital. I had a laparoscopy which is the only definitive way to diagnose endometriosis. Treatment has included Zoladex, which sparks a six month 'mini menopause' which starves the endometriosis tissue of oestrogen. 'Endo belly' is another symptom. It's very common, and is an inflammation of the organs that have endo tissue attached to them. It's very painful and can make you look pregnant. Currently, my endometriosis is worse than ever. I can't stand up during my periods and I'm in pain everyday. This pain severely affects my quality of life and I'm hoping for another operation to remove the endo tissue eventually. I consider my diagnosis time of roughly a year (from the first doctor's appointment to the laparoscopic surgery) very lucky because the average time for an endometriosis diagnosis is 7.5 years. I created my Instagram (www.instagram.com/friendometriosis_) page to raise awareness and share my story in a lighthearted yet informative way. I share my journey with endo, I share the stories of famous people who have endo and I share artwork I have found on Instagram that depicts the condition. I don't want anyone to feel the loneliness I felt when I was diagnosed and hopefully this is space for them to connect with others. I was shocked to have so many people I already knew reach out and tell me they had endo or they were struggling to get a diagnosis. Endometriosis was named as one of the NHS's top 20 most painful conditions. It affects one in ten people assigned female at birth so very common (asthma affects one in 11). Endo has no cure and it's often misdiagnosed. I hadn't even heard of it before my diagnosis. It's often thought of as 'a bad period' which is not true. Pain happens all the time and is not just a pelvic condition. Endo has been found on many different organs in the body, even in men. March is endometriosis awareness month and I am trying to get people talking about the condition (I ran the virtual London marathon in 2021 to raise money for Endometriosis UK). The more we mention endo, the more people will know about the serious impact it has on people's lives. It doesn't only impact the person suffering but all those around them, partners, friends, family and colleagues. Endo is a full body condition and has been found on many different organs so it isn't just a 'woman's problem'. For more information, check out: www.endometriosis-uk.org which has a wealth of information out there for people who have endo or think they may have it. I'd urge them (or people close to them) to read up on the condition. Endo is an invisible chronic illness so even though someone looks well, they might be in a great deal of pain." NHS Fact file * Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. * Endometriosis can affect women of any age, including teenagers. * It's a long-term condition that can have a significant impact on your life, but there are treatments that can help. Symptoms: * Pain in your lower tummy or back (pelvic pain) – usually worse during your period * Period pain that stops you doing your normal activities * Pain during or after sex * Pain when peeing or pooing during your period * Feeling sick, constipation, diarrhoea, or blood in your pee or poo during your period * Difficulty getting pregnant * You may also have heavy periods. You might use lots of pads or tampons, or you may bleed through to your clothes See a GP if you have symptoms of endometriosis, especially if they're having a big impact on your life.
