The UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), is a multidisciplinary department with a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. The Future Availability of Secondary Raw Materials (FutuRaM) project funded under Horizon Europe with a budget of £12.7 million seeks to: 1) develop knowledge on the availability and recoverability of secondary raw materials in Europe, and 2) disseminate this information via a systematic and transparent Secondary Raw Materials Knowledge-Base.
The Research Fellow for Future Availability of Secondary Raw Materials for Construction will therefore be tasked with: 1) characterisation of properties and flows of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) and other wastes with the potential for recovery as secondary raw materials in this sector, and 2) performance of a case study for classification of an industrial C&DW recovery project in accordance with the United Nations Framework Classification for Anthropogenic Resources (UNFC). As a key member of the UCL research team led by Professor Julia Stegemann, comprising two academic staff and four researchers collaborating for FutuRaM, the post holder will work closely with several other FutuRaM partners. The position will also be an integral part of the UCL CircEL research team, with a close association to the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Mineral-based Construction Materials.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a relevant field or a Masters degree with significant relevant experience, have understanding and experience with application of material flow analysis, and understanding and experience of assessment of technical, economic, environmental, and/or social aspects of construction materials and/or wastes. An understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Circular Economy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is also essential. Familiarity with resource classification, such as the United Nations Framework Classification for Anthropogenic Resources, and familiarity with use of the European List of Wastes and Eurostat, including microdata, would be an advantage.
